Toy Factory Theatre Ensemble - Army Daze

10% Discount for ASA Members!

National Service is an integral part of every Singaporean male’s journey towards manhood. Through Army Daze, we salute Singaporean boys as they don uniforms and begin their march into maturity whilst celebrating how the sons of diverse circumstances come under one camp and become brothers; where the boundaries of race, age and social status become blurred.

Michael Chiang's play is about the misadventures of 5 young men going through their Basic Military Training. The 5 protagonists are: Malcolm Png, the middle-class mummy's boy whose overbearing and highly protective mother just wants him to be a clerk and “not work too hard”; Ah Beng, the street-wise hokkien-spewing HDB boy; Krishna, who is always pining for his girlfriend Lathi; the limp-wristed Kenny, who dreams of stardom and wants to join the Music and Drama Company, and Johari, the happy-go-lucky "Rambo".

Screaming superiors and grueling exercises aside, the boys have to deal with their lives outside the microcosm of their platoon, like Krishna’s relationship problems with his flirtatious girlfriend and Kenny’s angst with his family who has abandoned him for Australia.

Under these circumstances, the 5 recruits learn more about each other and themselves whilst having to adjust to army life and their new haircuts with comic results.

Action Theatre - Doubt

Discounts for ASA Members! Please download form here. (Must be booked before 19 March)

It's been described by critics as "a breathtaking work of immense proportion" and "an experience to last a lifetime". It has swept all major theatre awards in the U.S. including the 2005 Pulitzer Prize and the 2005 Tony Award for Best Play. It is currently Broadway's hottest ticket playing to full houses night after night in New York.

Written by John Patrick Shanley, the Oscar-winning writer of Moonstruck, Doubt is set against the backdrop of a Bronx Catholic school in 1964. It tells a thrilling and powerful story about two nuns who suspect a priest of foul play with one of his students. Certain of his guilt, one nun continues to persecute the priest further. The other nun is torn between the harsh nun and the seemingly kind priest.

As the intensely suspenseful tale unfolds, questions of doubt multiply, both for the characters and for the audience. Does something called "the truth" exist? When is an issue so important that one must put aside doubts and act? When do one's doubts lead to growth?

Directed by Samantha Scott-Blackhall; Starring Nora Samosir, Lim Yu-Beng, Pamela Oei

Dates: 24 March - 2 April 2006
Venue: Jubilee Hall, Raffles Hotel

The Theatre Practice - Poor Theatre Series 2006 - Catman

Presented by The Theatre Practice

Alvin Chiam’s directorial debut CATMAN leads you through
unchartered waters to a land of bizarre mysteries….

A mysterious man chances upon a cat in a nameless city, but does not realise that it is actually a catman. A series of bizarre events begins to slowly unfold. The man finds himself caught in the grip of unfathomable nightmares, and wakes to find himself castrated! Is he still walking in his dreams, or has he awoken to a greater horror? What strange link binds the man to the cat? What would happen if you encountered a talking cat? Or if your lover turns to you in the night with a plaintive “meow”? Would your life still be normal? Would you still know what is normal?

The dangers of castration:
Castration of the tongue – will lead to a linguistic impotence.
Castration of the reproductive system - will lead to a biological abnormality.
Castration of thoughts and ideas – will leave us with an ignorant and insular society!

When you are feeling normal, dare to enter the unusual.

Directed by Alvin Chiam
