A friend of mine had a most stunning cat who looked so innocent and sweet. But when he went away for 2 weeks to visit his parents – leaving her with a loving and caring cat-sitter - this sweet innocent looking thing shredded his favourite sofa from head to foot. I wanted to capture the very convincing, wide-eyed, innocent beauty of this jealous shrew. My paintings are bright, cheerful and happy, and are emotional photographs, capturing the moods I am in… sometimes it is delight, at rediscovering a childhood pleasure, at times, in spite of the riotous colours, there is longing… nostalgia for a time past. My palette reflects my Peranakan heritage and love for bright and vibrant colours. The style I paint in is the school where the visual elements are all created – unschooled and untutored – possessing its (the artist’s) own idiosyncratic language and idiom.
