About the work (Faces of India I)

Taken in Agra, I was elated to capture a rare moment outside the doorway to the ‘Taji’ ( my affectionate term for the Taj Mahal). The woman was carrying dirt - a tray of dung. This picture of hardwork and grace turned sour for me. Looking around, I was disgusted by the town being so dirty. Agra is the home of one of the greatest wonders of the world yet, besides being so DIRTY, why is there so much poverty compared to Delhi, Calcutta, and Madras?…Why …oh why? Don’t the authorities make enough money from the tourists? The hardship of poverty has robbed the ordinary folks the pleasure of enjoying the beauty of Taji.

About the work (Faces of India II)

This is a picture of a man rowing our boat on the Ganga in Varanasi. Also with me, were R. Chandran from Act 3 and Annabelle Francis. The old man remained expressionless throughout our 3-hour sunset journey with him. I was dying to talk to him but somehow he built a wall around him. So I thought: maybe if I aim my camera at him, I would be able to make him smile a little? He remained deep in thoughts. I often wondered what stories there were behind his calm and emotionless composure. Did a life of immense hardship turned him into this silent and enigmatic rower?
